Overwatch Competitive Tier List Rankings - July 2016 Edition

Hi everyone! The map based tier list is still in the works for this weekend, but in the meantime I wanted to put together a quick update to the overall tier list as well. This one's intended more as a "which heroes should I learn to climb quickly"?

After the healthy nerfs on McCree and Widowmaker, many other offensive heroes rose to the top, now with increased viability in comparison to the weakened former elites. Most notably, Pharah and Reaper are considerably stronger since they're no longer killed as easily.

Introduction

Hi everyone! The map based tier list is still in the works for this weekend, but in the meantime I wanted to put together a quick update to the overall tier list as well. This one's intended more as a "which heroes should I learn to climb quickly"?

After the healthy nerfs on McCree and Widowmaker, many other offensive heroes rose to the top, now with increased viability in comparison to the weakened former elites. Most notably, Pharah and Reaper are considerably stronger since they're no longer killed as easily.

Explanation of Tiers

  • Junkrat [Tier 1] - Junkrat's ability as a Tier 1 hero lies mostly in his versatility on both offense and defense. His ability to hit enemies from around corners allows him to safely take out otherwise dangerous targets, and his damage output is enough to take out most squishies in a few direct hits.
  • Pharah [Tier 1] - After nerfs to Widowmaker and McCree, they are played much less, and when they are they are less effective. As a result, fewer heroes have the ability to take down Pharah fast enough before she rains down her missile barrage, a highly effective offense spell that was always somewhat hampered by her low defensive stats. She is also very good against turret based heroes, which are still popular on the competitive scene at the moment.
  • McCree [Tier 2] - Despite being the lowest on the list for offense heroes, McCree is still perfectly fine if you are already good at him. He needs to hit his headshots to be strong, but in the hands of a competent player McCree is still great.
  • Soldier:76 [Tier 1] - After nerfs to McCree, Soldier:76 is essentially the go-to offense hero for on nearly every map. His sprint ability is great for staying in the fray, especially as a last ditch pick when the timer is running out. He is not particularly amazing in one specific area, but instead does everything well.
  • Symmetra [Tier 2] - Symmetra may not be especially strong in all situations, but on defense for escort and assault maps she's especially valuable for her teleporter ultimate. Additionally, her skills are excellent for chokepoints as they auto-target and can easily take down the majority of players before they are able to respond. However, on offense her usefulness is highly suspect.
  • Torbjorn [Tier 2] - Similar to Symmetra, Torbjorn is arguably one of the best defensive heroes for defense based assault or escort maps. Most control maps are arranged to allow heroes like Pharah and Junkrat to take down his turret with ease. However, maps like Volskaya Industries allow Torb to perform extremely well with limited entrances and excellent corners to place his turret.
  • Widowmaker [Tier 2] - Similar to McCree, Widowmaker is in a fairly balanced state right now. She is definitely a more reliable sniper than Hanzo, but is not necessarily a must pick for every map unless you happen to be insanely good on her. The fact that her headshots can take out most squishies in one hit fully charged will always keep her on the professional scene, but for most players she will largely be used to counter specific problem heroes.
  • Zarya [Tier 1] - Zarya is rising up quite a bit this tier list simply because of her insanely tanky constitution, which makes it very difficult for enemy teams to break through her shield. Her ability to shield allies also allows for some excellent plays, and her damage output is nothing to scoff at either.
  • Zenyatta [Tier 3] - Zenyatta's main issue is his low mobility and extremely low health pool. His ability to buff and debuff is rather good, but to survive long enough to dish them out poses a big problem for him.

Description of Tiers

God Tier: These heroes are strong in almost any situation, and can be played by even relatively new players with ease. Their game-impact is felt immensely even without particularly high skill.

Tier 1: These heroes are capable of taking over a game by themselves in the right hands, but may have one or two flaws that enemies can take advantage of.

Tier 2: These heroes are balanced and can be played in a variety of scenarios.

Tier 3: These heroes are are playable, but higher tier heroes can perform the same roles either easier or better than they can.
