Competitive Play Rewards and Skill Rating System Revealed

A few days ago, game director Jeff Kaplan released a video discussing Overwatch's upcoming ranked system, dubbed "Competitive Play Mode". Here, he goes over a few key points as well as goals that they have in the game. Apparently, they're not using a classical tier system, but instead via "Skill Ratings" between 1 and 100.

Here, he goes over a few key points as well as goals that they have in the game. Apparently, they're not using a classical tier system, but instead via "Skill Ratings" between 1 and 100.

Overview

General Information
  • New heroes and new maps will be released later this year
  • Spectate Mode will be improved for broadcasting and observing

Competitive Play
  • Slated for "The end of June" (SOON!)
  • Seasons will be about three months (2.5 months to be exact) based on real world seasons
    • 2 week breaks between each competitive season
Map Changes
  • Assault, Hybrid, and Escort Mode
    • Sudden Death occurrences will be greatly minimized
  • Assault maps will last longer in order to reduce snowballing
Skill Rating
  • Tiers will be removed and replaced with "Skill Rating" of 1 to 100
    • All your skill ratings will show to everyone at the start of the game along with the average skill rating.
    • Not all matches will be fair, but you will win more and lose less if the match is "unfair".
    • This will increase transparency.
    • After completing placement matches you will be given your skill rating.
Rewards for Competitive Play
  • Cosmetic Rewards only
    • Custom sprays
    • "Golden Guns" - Only high skill players will be able to unlock these 
    • High skill players will also receive exclusive cosmetic rewards
